SEO in 2020 and Beyond: The Two Most Important Things to Know

Search engine optimization or SEO has become almost like a secret code. Businesses and marketing departments ask if you know how to do SEO before they hire you to handle their marketing. Marketers position themselves as SEO leaders or trendsetters. While it may seem like a mystery on how to be successful with search engine optimization, it really comes down to two things for SEO in 2020.

Do SEO Well

You can’t put in a half-hearted effort and expect phenomenal results. If you want to meet your goals, you must do SEO well. This means having a solid B2B or B2C SEO strategy and the mindset to stick with it even if you don’t see immediate results.

SEO is like running a marathon. It’s not a sprint. This is especially true if you have a brand-new website for your business.

If SEO hasn’t been a priority in the past, then you’re playing catch-up with your competition that has been around for years. If you don’t go all-in, you’ll never get caught up to where they are. Just like a runner who joins the race late, you have to catch the runners who started before you did. As more runners tire and quit, you’ll have less competition. This is what happens to those companies that get tired of SEO. They stop and now there’s more room for you to be successful.

When a runner starts looking at how far away the finish line is from where they are, it’s easy to get discouraged. Instead, look at how far you’ve come and the other runners you’re passing. You went from the end of the pack if you started late to the top ten. Now, you’ve passed number nine, then eight.

In the same way with plenty of patience, you will slowly gain ground over other B2B or B2B competitors who aren’t being strategic or consistent with SEO. You’ll begin to rank higher than them in 2020 even if you aren’t yet in first place. The key is to do SEO well. How well is your website optimized for search engines? Keep Doing SEO Well

The second main thing to remember about SEO is just to keep doing it. Unfortunately, many companies aren’t aware of how important this is to Google. Be consistent. Don’t fall off one month with plans to get back on the next month. Realize that tomorrow will build on today. The companies that are winning at SEO today have been “proving themselves” to Google month after month for years. Think of all the companies we wouldn’t have today if they had given up when it didn’t look like success would ever come:

  • FedEx was losing a million dollars each month in the early days and even got down to just $5000 in operating cash at one point. But look at FedEx today, a recognized leader.
  • Apple was getting closer to bankruptcy after Steve Jobs left in 1985, before turning around with his return in 1997.
  • Airbnb started in 2008 but failed to catch the attention of investors. After struggling to make ends meet, the investors came through and the company built its empire.

Stories like these remind us that success takes time and consistently doing things well, over and over again. As the popular saying goes, it can take years to become an overnight sensation. If you want to dominate your market, you must do SEO well in 2020 and beyond. Not just for a few weeks or months but indefinitely. Remember, there are always more keywords to rank higher for, and a bigger piece of the pie to claim. When it comes to SEO, there is no such thing as a finish line.

I love this patient, persistent approach to success! It flies in the face of “get rich quick” schemes so broadly marketed through click-bait social media campaigns – but in the end it’s the only way to have long-lasting success: be strategic and don’t give up.

SEO will be important forever and for every website, whether new or old. And yes, SEO takes time so patience and persistent is important to success.
